Making the most of land and sea products, the Algarvians put unique specialities on the table, but also a few of the usual dishes from other region’s in the country.

“Deitar os trigos” (sowing the wheat): wheat seeds are left on little china dishes to form the “searinhas” (shoots of wheat) of the nativity scenes. They are set on a throne or a staircase, highlighting the standing Baby Jesus.

Charolas: during January, Charola groups walk around the different parishes involving the population in a secular tradition, through songs where they present their vows for the new year.

In some areas, a glass of wine or a fruit tart are left for Santa.

On 5 January, children fill their shoes with carrots and straw and leave them on the doorsteps or on the window sills, so that the horses of the Wise Men can be fed.
